Why Do People Snore?

Snoring occurs when the soft palate tissues at the back of the throat become elongated or lax, partially obstructing the airway during sleep. As air flows past these relaxed tissues, it causes vibration that produces the familiar snoring sound.

Several factors can contribute to or worsen snoring, including weight gain that leads to excess fat deposits around the neck, poor muscle tone in the throat and tongue, and the use of alcohol or sedatives before bed.

Risk Factors for Snoring

Understanding the factors that contribute to snoring can help you and your doctor develop an effective treatment plan. Many of these risk factors are modifiable with the right guidance and treatment.

Excess neck fat narrows the airway during sleep

Neck Circumference

Men 17+ inches and women 16+ inches at higher risk

Poor Muscle Tone

Lax throat muscles collapse more easily during sleep

Alcohol & Sedatives
