What Is TMJ Disorder?

Temporomandibular disorder, commonly known as TMD, is a condition that stems from abnormal jaw actions and dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint. The TMJ connects the jawbone to the skull and allows for essential movements like chewing, speaking, and yawning.

TMD is frequently linked to undiagnosed sleep breathing issues. Patients often suffer from a range of symptoms including headaches, jaw pain, facial pain, neck and back pain, jaw popping and clicking, difficulty opening the mouth, catching or locking of the jaw, and ear pain or ringing.

TMD Symptoms & Headaches

Many patients with TMD experience chronic headaches that are often misdiagnosed as migraines or tension headaches. These primary headaches can be debilitating and are frequently a direct result of jaw dysfunction and muscle tension.

Additional symptoms include facial, neck, and back pain that radiates from the jaw area, as well as jaw popping, clicking, and difficulty opening the mouth fully. Ear pain and ringing (tinnitus) are also common complaints.

The most common symptoms include jaw pain or tenderness, clicking or popping sounds when opening your mouth, chronic headaches or migraines, ear pain or ringing (tinnitus), neck and shoulder pain, and difficulty chewing. Many patients experience several of these symptoms simultaneously.
Dr. Krish uses a comprehensive approach including a thorough physical examination of the jaw, head, and neck, motor reflex testing, measurements and photos, and 3D imaging (CBCT) scans when necessary. This multi-faceted evaluation helps pinpoint the exact cause of your TMJ symptoms and guides your personalized treatment plan.
Yes. TMJ disorder is one of the most common causes of chronic headaches and migraines. The trigeminal nerve, which is responsible for most head and face sensation, runs directly through the jaw joint area. When the TMJ is inflamed or misaligned, it can trigger frequent, severe headaches that are often misdiagnosed as tension headaches or migraines.
We offer several non-surgical treatment options including custom oral appliances to realign the jaw, trigger point injections for immediate pain relief, cold laser therapy to reduce inflammation, SPG nerve blocks for chronic pain, myofunctional therapy to strengthen supporting muscles, and PRF injections to promote healing. Dr. Krish will recommend the best combination based on your specific diagnosis.
Yes, we accept most major medical insurance plans. TMJ disorder treatment is typically covered under medical insurance, not dental. Our team will verify your benefits and explain your coverage before treatment begins so there are no surprises.
